South Bend, IN: bulky pickup & disposal rules

City confirms one complimentary bulky/appliance pickup per month for homeowners in City limits and $20/yd³ for additional pickup. Narrow eligibility copy.

1

Quick answer

South Bend municipal solid-waste customers can request a complimentary monthly extra-item pickup covering one large approved object or appliance. It must be booked; crews are not obliged to collect an unregistered couch next to the regular bin.

Important before pickup:Confirm the current item eligibility, booking cutoff and service address with the City or contractor. Charges may change.
2

Who qualifies

The offer is for residential addresses inside the City’s sanitation service. Nearby unincorporated St. Joseph County addresses and multifamily commercial dumpsters may be served differently.

3

Furniture, mattresses and appliances

One approved large furniture item or appliance can use the free monthly appointment. Additional or unusually large loads may be charged by volume under the City’s special-pickup schedule. The City’s 311 instructions require all appliance doors and lids to be removed or taped shut before collection.

4

Before setting anything out

Request the monthly extra pickup through South Bend 311 or its online Solid Waste process. Appointments are linked to the normal trash route. Place the approved object within about two feet of the curb by 6 a.m. on the confirmed collection date, and not earlier than the City’s allowed 24-hour setout window.

5

What not to put in the bulky pile

Household hazardous waste, computers/electronics, liquid chemicals and loose remodeling debris must not be thrown into a one-item appointment.

6

Where to take other large items

The City links to St. Joseph County household hazardous-waste services; additional monthly extra bulky pickups cost $20 per cubic yard under the City’s published schedule; confirm charges when booking.
