How Kansas City bulky pickup works
Kansas City, Missouri offers free bulky collection by appointment for single-family homes and apartment properties with six units or fewer. Appointments are offered Monday through Friday and must be booked before anything is placed at the curb.
Each appointment allows up to 15 listed items. Every item must weigh less than 500 pounds. Items not included in the booking can be left behind, so residents should list the complete set-out when scheduling through the official scheduler or 311.
Set-out rules
Place bulky items within 3 feet of the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. Do not put them out before 3 p.m. the day before. Keep the bulky items at least 4 feet from trash and recycling carts and clear of vehicles, mailboxes, trees, poles and low wires.
Furniture, mattresses and televisions
Accepted household bulky items include couches, tables, chairs, beds, mattresses, cabinets, bathroom fixtures, rugs, carpet and televisions. Carpet must meet the City’s preparation rules; smaller carpet pieces that fit within regular-trash limits may belong in ordinary trash instead.
Appliances and refrigerant units
Kansas City accepts refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, water heaters and furnaces. Refrigerated units are collected by a separate truck, so the resident must identify them when booking.
Empty refrigerators/freezers and remove shelves, drawers or doors when possible. If you are unsure whether an appliance contains refrigerant, mention it in the appointment.
Construction material, yard waste and tires
Normal bulky service does not take waste tires, yard waste, paint, household hazardous waste, auto parts, loose building material or masonry. Some small building material can qualify for ordinary weekly trash when bundled/bagged within normal trash size and weight rules, but a loose renovation pile does not belong in bulky pickup.
Waste tires use separate City/NCAP drop-off programs. Check the current event calendar before making a trip because dates, hours and fees vary by event and tire type.
Glass and miscellaneous preparation
Storm windows and glass panes should be marked with a large “X” of masking tape and kept separate. Lawn mowers need fuel and oil removed. Metal fencing and swing sets should be disassembled before pickup.
