Lancaster, PA: bulky pickup, appliances & disposal

Find the collection provider, appointment requirements and separate handling for bulky household items.

Quick answer

Lancaster, Pennsylvania City residential trash customers may set out one qualifying oversized item per unit each week. That week the trash allowance is limited to four containers. Ordinary furniture and mattress/box-spring sets belong to this route; white goods, including refrigerators, washers, dryers and microwaves, require a separate monthly collection with a $15 tag.

For the City collection program, set containers out after 6 p.m. the evening before pickup and remove them by 8 p.m. collection day. The City’s residential trash rules and the collection calendar control eligibility and timing.

Check the pickup route for your address

  1. Identify the account. Confirm the exact street address and whether you use a City contract, private hauler, property manager or HOA arrangement.
  2. Describe the materials. State how many sofas, mattresses, appliances, boxes or cubic yards need disposal, and ask if a separate collection is needed.
  3. Get setout instructions. Confirm whether a booking is required. Check the collection day, earliest setout, maximum weight or size, and any applicable charge before placing items outside.

What belongs in bulky pickup?

Sofas and furniture

The City’s eligible weekly oversize items include sofas, stuffed chairs, other furniture, mattress-and-box-spring sets and carpet rolled no wider than four feet. Limit one oversized item per residential unit per week, and keep the piece manageable for two workers to load.

Mattresses and box springs

If you have a mattress or box spring, confirm any current protective wrapping requirement with the collector. Do not treat the general one-item-per-week rule as permission to set out appliances.

Refrigerators and white goods

White goods such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water coolers, washers, dryers, water heaters and microwaves use a separate monthly collection route. The City requires a $15 tag purchased from its Treasury Office at 39 West Chestnut Street; check the published monthly calendar.

Electronics and hazardous waste

Do not add batteries, paint, chemicals or televisions to an unconfirmed pile. These may require a separate recycling or household hazardous-waste service.

Fees, facilities and exclusions

One qualifying oversized item is included in the ordinary residential weekly collection allowance. The City’s monthly white-goods route requires a separate $15 tag. Ask the Solid Waste Hotline at 717-291-4744 for unusual loads and current rates.

If your item is excluded, ask about an authorized transfer station, reuse program or material-specific collection. Confirm public access, hours and accepted items before transporting it; a municipal recycling depot may not accept household furniture.

Before you leave it curbside

  • Check your address is inside the service boundary, not simply the same postal city.
  • Separate household furniture, appliances, building debris and chemicals.
  • Keep sidewalks, drainage, mailboxes and access ramps clear.
  • If an appointment is required, save the confirmation; otherwise verify the normal pickup day.
