Quick answer

Virginia Beach residents who receive City curbside service can schedule bulky/large-item pickup online, by phone at 757-385-4650, by email or in person. The City asks residents to submit the request at least three days before the regular weekly trash day.

Bulky service is for items too large for the black trash cart that the resident cannot reasonably transport to the City Landfill & Resource Recovery Center. Current City guidance includes item-specific size rules — for example, rugs can be up to 9 × 12 feet, and qualifying sheds can be up to 9 × 12 feet / 108 square feet — so check the live accepted-item list for unusual material.

02

Furniture, mattresses and set-out basics

Furniture, mattresses and similar oversized household items are typical bulky-pickup candidates. Set-out instructions can be item-specific, and the City asks residents to keep piles clear of carts, vehicles, mailboxes and other obstructions. Do not put items at the curb days in advance simply because you submitted a request.

Use the confirmation or VB311 status as the practical trigger for set-out. If an item is not eligible for curbside collection, the Landfill & Resource Recovery Center may provide a resident drop-off option.

03

Landfill and Resource Recovery Center

Virginia Beach operates the Landfill & Resource Recovery Center for residents, but access rules matter. The facility requires proof of residency and limits disposal access to qualifying residential vehicles. Commercial-looking vehicles, certain cargo vans, oversized trailers and other vehicle types can be denied even when the material came from a residence.

The Resource Recovery Center accepts or recycles many special materials, including qualifying electronics, appliances, clean concrete/brick/stone and household hazardous items through the appropriate facility area. Always check the material and vehicle rules before loading a trailer.

04

Tires, paint and remodeling debris

Tires, paint, rechargeable batteries, propane tanks, vehicle parts and many remodeling materials cannot simply go in the black trash cart. The City directs residents to special disposal routes, including the Resource Recovery Center, for eligible materials.

Construction and remodeling debris is especially important to separate from ordinary bulky pickup. Carpet, doors, cabinets, toilets, sinks, concrete, rocks and similar project material are listed among items that do not belong in the normal trash cart; some have facility routes while larger construction loads may require a private disposal facility.
