How Long Beach Special Collection works

Long Beach provides each City-serviced refuse account 12 Special Collections per calendar year at no additional base collection cost. Residents schedule online or through the City call center at (562) 570-2876. Special-handling regulatory fees may apply to certain items even when the appointment itself is included.

Each scheduled pickup allows up to 8 large items or 25 bags, bundles or boxes. The City allows two included pickups to be used on the same day when a resident has a larger set-out.

02

Set-out, size and glass rules

Place items at the regular collection location by 6 a.m. on the confirmed day. Do not set material out before the scheduled day. Standard items may not exceed 72 × 48 inches; bundles may not exceed 48 inches in any direction or 40 pounds, and bags may not exceed 25 pounds.

Large glass—including mirrors, windows and tabletops—must be fully wrapped in sturdy material such as cardboard or heavy-duty plastic. Unwrapped large glass will not be collected.

03

Furniture and mattresses

Furniture and mattresses qualify for Special Collection. Mattresses should remain unobstructed; the City specifically instructs residents not to stack other material on top of them. Oversized furniture such as a sofa that exceeds the standard size rule should be identified when the appointment is scheduled.

04

Appliances and electronics

Long Beach accepts household appliances, computers, monitors and televisions. Refrigerators and freezers must have their doors removed or taped shut.

Appliances, televisions and computer monitors are collected by a separate special-handling truck, so they should be kept apart from the ordinary furniture pile as instructed.

05

Tires and yard trimmings

The current Special Collection page accepts up to five tires per pickup, limited to tires approximately 16 inches or smaller. Tires are also handled by a separate truck.

Large yard trimmings can qualify when prepared in tied bundles approximately 4 feet long and no more than 40 pounds.

06

Construction debris and HHW

Rocks, concrete, dirt and construction/demolition material do not belong in ordinary refuse carts and should use an appropriate C&D disposal route. Paint, gasoline, motor oil, household chemicals and other hazardous material use Long Beach/Los Angeles County HHW programs rather than a Special Collection pile.

Because HHW event dates and locations can change, residents should use the City’s current HHW page before making a trip.
