01

Oakland’s two free bulky benefits

Oakland residents can directly schedule bulky service with Waste Management of Alameda County. Each resident household receives one free curbside bulky pickup per year and one free bulky drop-off appointment at the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex in San Leandro.

Single-family homes can qualify for a second free curbside pickup after using both the normal curbside appointment and the annual Davis Street drop-off. Renters can schedule directly without needing property-manager approval.

02

Curbside pile size and timing

The base curbside allowance is approximately 4 cubic yards, described by the City as roughly 3 ft × 3 ft × 12 ft, plus limited quantities of specified large items. Set material out by 6 a.m. on appointment day and no more than one day early. Set-outs above the allowance can incur fees.

Furniture and carpet are accepted; carpet should be rolled and taped. Loose non-hazardous household items can be boxed or bagged.

03

Appliances, mattresses, electronics and tires

In addition to the four-cubic-yard base pile, Oakland’s current curbside rules allow 1 appliance, 2 mattresses/box springs, 2 automobile-size tires or smaller with rims allowed, and 2 computer monitors/CPUs/TVs. Consumer electronics are also listed as accepted.

These special-count items should be kept separate from the ordinary bulky pile so the collection crews can handle them correctly.

04

Home-remodeling material and yard waste

Oakland’s current bulky page is more permissive than many cities: it accepts painted wood/doors and home-remodeling debris within the published bulky allowance. It also accepts plant debris in paper bags and branches up to approximately 4 feet long and 6 inches wide, plus bundled clean wood.

However, dirt, rock and concrete are excluded. Larger permitted construction projects must still follow Oakland’s C&D recycling and authorized-hauler rules.

05

Davis Street drop-off

The annual free self-haul appointment covers up to 4 cubic yards at the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex, 2615 Davis Street, San Leandro. The current City page lists furniture, carpet, painted wood/doors, home-remodeling debris, appliances, monitors/electronics, automobile tires, scrap metal, cardboard and plant debris among accepted categories.

Bring proof of Oakland residency and the appointment confirmation. Facility rules can differ from curbside rules, so residents should review the current appointment instructions before loading unusual items.

06

Household hazardous waste

Paint, solvents, motor oil, batteries, fluorescent lamps and other household hazardous or medical waste are not part of Oakland bulky service. Alameda County provides residential HHW service, including an Oakland facility at 2100 East 7th Street. The current household limit is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle per day.
