Sacramento trash & bulky-item rules
Sacramento separates household junk from appliances/e-waste: eligible customers get two free appointments for each program every year.

Two different appointment programs
Sacramento residential collection customers can schedule two free Household Junk Pickup appointments per year, generally from February through October. The City pauses or reduces junk appointments as leaf season approaches in late October and prioritizes leaf collection during November through January.
Separate from those junk appointments, residential customers receive two appliance/e-waste appointments per calendar year. That program operates year-round. Do not combine appliances and electronics into an ordinary household-junk appointment.
Household Junk pile rules
A Household Junk pile may not exceed approximately 4 feet × 4 feet × 9 feet. Material may be placed out no earlier than 24 hours before the confirmed appointment and must be ready by 6 a.m. on collection day. Place the pile at least 6 feet from parked vehicles.
Loose small items should go in disposable containers such as cardboard boxes. Keep sidewalks and streets clear. The pile belongs on the public street at the approved collection point—not in an alley or driveway.
Furniture, mattresses, tires and yard waste
Accepted junk includes furniture, mattresses, carpet, toys, limited pipe/lumber and up to four unmounted tires. Tires still mounted on rims are excluded.
Yard waste is accepted but must remain clearly separated from ordinary junk. Current limits include branches cut to 3 feet long and 4 inches or less in diameter. Larger stumps are excluded.
Appliances and electronics
The separate appliance/e-waste appointment allows up to 2 appliances and 4 e-waste items per appointment. Accepted appliances include refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners and dishwashers. Accepted e-waste includes televisions, monitors, computers, printers and game systems.
Using the correct appointment matters: e-waste and appliances are explicitly excluded from the Household Junk pile.
Construction debris and HHW
Construction debris such as dirt, rock, rubble and concrete is excluded from Household Junk Pickup. Treated wood waste also follows a separate disposal route and may be accepted at Kiefer Landfill under current rules and fees.
Paint, chemicals, gas cylinders and other household hazardous waste use the City/County HHW system rather than curbside junk. Sacramento’s current guidance identifies the Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station at 8491 Fruitridge Road as a household hazardous-waste/self-haul resource.
Multifamily and self-haul
Residents of multifamily properties with five or more units that do not receive City residential collection should contact the landlord, property manager or commercial hauler rather than assuming City junk appointments apply.
City residential customers also receive an annual dump coupon in the service guide for a qualifying self-haul load, providing another option when an appointment is inconvenient.
