Quick answer
Fort Lauderdale provides monthly residential bulk-trash service to single-family homes and multifamily accounts with three units or fewer. The normal maximum pile is 10 cubic yards, approximately 6 feet wide × 15 feet long × 3 feet high.
Bulk must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day and should not be placed out more than 24 hours early. Early set-out or material remaining after the collection window can lead to a citation.
Furniture, mattresses and appliances
The accepted list includes furniture, carpet, mattresses, toys, bicycles, refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, stoves, washers and dryers. Appliances must be empty, and refrigerator doors must be removed or secured.
Keep the pile away from parked vehicles, fences, mailboxes, trees, overhead wires, storm drains and other obstacles. The City's residential guide also calls for separation from carts and other set-outs so the collection equipment can reach the pile.
Tires and electronics use special routes
Fort Lauderdale has a separate curbside tire program: residents may place up to two passenger or light-truck tires no larger than 20 inches next to the black garbage cart on a scheduled garbage day, with a maximum of four tires per household per year.
Electronics have their own curbside request system. Eligible City trash-and-recycling customers can request pickup of TVs, computers, monitors, printers, scanners, routers, speakers and other listed electronics by 4 p.m. the day before the regular recycling day.
Construction debris and glass
Normal construction and demolition debris does not belong in the monthly bulk pile. The prohibited list includes drywall, cabinets/countertops, insulation, roofing material, bricks, masonry, concrete, tile, pavers, dirt and sand.
Glass requires special preparation: the City's bulk guide instructs residents not to mix glass into the ordinary pile. Glass should be placed adjacent to the bulk material in a rigid container so crews can handle it separately and safely.
Yard waste, oversize piles and HHW
Residential yard waste is collected weekly. The City's bulk guide allows larger tree limbs up to 12 feet long and 12 inches in diameter; larger tree sections and stumps fall outside the ordinary rules.
Piles over the 10-cubic-yard monthly allowance require a paid special pickup, with the price determined after the pile is measured. Paint, pesticides, chemicals and other household hazardous waste use the City's HHW/electronics collection events rather than the monthly bulk pile.
