Louisville trash & bulky-item rules

Louisville’s Urban Services District uses appointment-based large-item pickup: up to four approved large items per appointment, as often as once per week. Outside the district, your private waste hauler controls bulky service.

Quick answer

Louisville Metro’s current large-item program is not an unlimited junk pile. Residents in the Urban Services District may schedule an appointment for up to four large items, with appointments available as often as once per week. The city sends confirmation of the approved items before the appointment, and the approved material should be set out the day before the confirmed collection date.

If you live outside the Urban Services District, Louisville tells residents to contact their waste hauler. That service-boundary distinction matters: a Louisville mailing address does not by itself mean Metro Public Works will collect the item.

02

Furniture, mattresses and ordinary large household items

The city’s accepted examples include couches, chairs, tables, beds, dressers, box springs, mattresses, toilets, floor lamps, playhouses, carpet rolls and similar oversized household items. Keep the approved item intact rather than breaking it into loose pieces, and place it at the same location used for garbage collection without blocking sidewalks, streets or access for the collection crew.

Washers, dryers, stoves, hot-water tanks, bicycles and bed frames are also listed among accepted metal items. Refrigerators and other equipment that contains or once contained Freon are excluded from regular large-item pickup and use a different disposal route.

03

Tires, electronics, hazardous waste and Freon appliances

Louisville separates several common problem items from the curbside large-item program. The city directs electronics to its Waste Reduction Center, household hazardous material to Haz Bin, and refrigerant-containing appliances to the designated Waste Reduction Center route. The city also lists a separate tire option, with household limits applying.

Do not put paint, chemicals, batteries, televisions or refrigerant appliances out simply because they are too large for the garbage cart. The material category—not just the size—controls which program applies.

04

Construction debris, tree debris and truckloads

Construction and demolition debris, contractor material and large tree-debris loads are not ordinary appointment-based large items. Louisville’s Public Works page routes truckloads and remodeling debris through separate disposal instructions and facilities. Plan disposal before demolition begins, especially if a contractor will create the material.

For a small cleanout, the four-item appointment system may be enough. For a room renovation, roofing project or truckload, use the city’s dedicated disposal guidance instead of making repeated curbside piles.
