Quick answer
Rochester collects bulky residential refuse such as furniture, bedding, mattresses and large appliances on the normal refuse day. Item-specific preparation rules apply, especially to appliances, loose wood and brush.
Who qualifies matters. Eligible City residential refuse customers; collection and preparation depend on the item.
Furniture, mattresses and appliances
Refrigerator and other latching-appliance doors must be removed. Loose wood, trees, bushes and hedges must be tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet, no larger than 18 inches in diameter and no heavier than 60 pounds; exposed nails must be removed or bent over. Contractor-generated waste is not collected.
Household hazardous waste and other special material
Household hazardous waste is handled through Monroe County's EcoPark system at 10 Avion Drive, with appointment and accepted-material rules published by the City and County.
Where to take large items in Rochester
The ecopark handles special materials but is not a general furniture/mattress dump.
Before set-out
Place eligible bulky refuse between the sidewalk and curb on the normal collection day and follow the City’s preparation rules. Use Monroe County EcoPark or another appropriate route for materials the City does not collect curbside.
- Confirm the service address and the agency or hauler responsible for it.
- Check whether the bulky route requires an appointment, assigned week, sticker, fee or volume limit.
