Quick answer
Knoxville allows eligible households to set out up to five bulky items per week and asks residents to file a bulky alert through 311 before set-out. The bulky truck may arrive up to two business days after the alert.
Who qualifies matters. Eligible City residential solid-waste customers; contractor and construction debris are excluded.
Furniture, mattresses and appliances
Furniture and other eligible oversized household items can use the route. Carpet must be rolled, tied and cut to 6 feet or less. Tires are accepted only when removed from rims. If more than five bulky items are set out at once, none will be collected and a Codes Enforcement violation may result.
Household hazardous waste and other special material
Household hazardous waste is handled separately at the City's facility at 1033 Elm Street. Paint, chemicals, fuels and similar materials should not be added to a bulky pile.

Before set-out
Call 311 before placing the bulky items out, keep the set-out to five eligible items or fewer, and leave at least 3 feet between the bulky material and the regular cart.
- Confirm the service address and the agency or hauler responsible for it.
- Check whether the bulky route requires an appointment, assigned week, sticker, fee or volume limit.
