Quick answer

Memphis calls its bulky route Outside the Cart. For City residential customers, it runs twice per month on designated regular collection days. The current household-garbage page limits a bulky pile to 10 cubic yards and tells residents to place the pile within three feet of the street while keeping it clear of cars, mailboxes, fences, trees and low branches.

The city also operates convenience centers for solid-waste-fee-paying customers who need an additional disposal route. The current Solid Waste page lists 304 Collins Street and 3207 Farrisview Boulevard, open Friday through Sunday, and tells users to bring a recent MLGW bill and photo ID.

02

Furniture, mattresses and ordinary bulky waste

Furniture and other large household items are the core use case for Memphis outside-the-cart collection. Keep the pile within the 10-cubic-yard limit and do not add material after crews have already passed. For a cleanout that does not fit the scheduled pile, the convenience centers are the city-backed alternative.

The city’s service is for eligible residential customers. Private developments, private streets and properties outside the City service area can have different collection arrangements, so verify your address if you are unsure who provides your garbage service.

03

Tires and yard debris

Homes serviced by the City may set out up to four tires, with the current household-garbage page listing a maximum size of 11 × 22.5 and warning that tire collection may require special arrangements. Call 311 if you are unsure how the tires should be prepared or when they will be removed.

Yard waste has separate weekly and outside-the-cart rules. Tree debris in a bulky pile must stay below the city’s published length and diameter limits, and waste generated by a professional landscaper or tree contractor must be removed by that contractor.

04

Construction debris, paint and household hazardous waste

Memphis explicitly says the City does not remove construction and demolition debris such as dirt, brick, rock, concrete, lumber, roofing, fencing material or carpet generated by construction or demolition. Contractors who create that waste are required to remove it.

Paint, chemicals, automotive liquids and other household hazardous waste use the Memphis/Shelby County household hazardous waste facility at 6305 Haley Road rather than the bulky pile. Current city pages disagree slightly on operating days, so check the live facility page before making a trip instead of relying on an old schedule.
