01

Quick answer

Spokane’s City-run garbage service can collect large or bulky household items, but residents need to arrange the service before collection day.

The City explains that calling ahead allows it to send the correct truck for the item. Do not place a couch or appliance out as if it were ordinary cart overflow.

City service is required for occupied properties within Spokane. Arrange an accepted bulky item for the normal garbage day through 311 or 509-755-2489 and obtain the charge before set-out. City temporary dumpsters are arranged at 509-625-7956; the City says private temporary dumpsters are not allowed within its collection area.

02

Furniture, mattresses and household bulky material

Furniture and other large household items can use the scheduled bulky route when accepted. Ask about item count and current charges at the time of the request.

Place the item where the City instructs and keep collection access clear.

03

Appliances, electronics, tires and hazardous items

Appliances, electronics, tires and household hazardous waste can have separate disposal or recycling programs.

Describe the exact item when you contact 311 so staff can direct it to bulk, recycling or a special-waste facility.

04

Renovation debris and larger cleanouts

Construction debris is not the same as a scheduled household bulky item. Use an appropriate transfer/landfill or debris service for remodel waste.

For a large property cleanout, ask the City which materials can be grouped into one service request.

City self-haul route for garbage and accepted material; HHW station hours can differ.

Spokane’s Waste-to-Energy facility is at 2900 South Geiger Boulevard, daily 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m., except listed major holidays. In 2026, garbage is $152.60 per ton with a $24.93 minimum for up to 320 pounds, plus a $2.68 self-haul vehicle fee. Yard/food waste is $76.95 per ton with an $8.19 minimum for up to 200 pounds, plus the vehicle fee.

Household HHW and qualifying recycling are free. HHW containers may be no larger than five gallons; automotive liquids are limited to five gallons of each type and must not be mixed. PaintCare accepts eligible oil/latex paint up to fifteen gallons. TVs/computers are not accepted as HHW and need a separate electronics route.

Business hazardous waste, explosives and other listed exclusions do not qualify. For the County-run North and Valley stations, the current City locations page says household hazardous waste is accepted Saturdays and Sundays only. That same page presents conflicting general station-hour blocks, so confirm ordinary transfer-station hours with Spokane County at 509-477-6800 before a special trip.

Before set-out

  1. Verify the service address. Confirm that City of Spokane Solid Waste Collection or its listed provider actually serves the property.

The City’s current locations page clearly limits HHW at the County-run North and Valley stations to Saturdays and Sundays, but it also displays conflicting general station-hour blocks. Waste-to-Energy hours are separately stated; confirm County station hours before a special trip.

City pages disagree about North/Valley county HHW days. Confirm those sites with Spokane County; the Waste-to-Energy hours below are separately verified.
