01

Quick answer

Madison’s large-item service begins online with a work order. Choose the Sunday you will place the item out, then the City routes collection during the following work week.

Do not put furniture out first and submit the work order afterward; the appointment system is how the City knows the material is authorized for collection.

02

Furniture, mattresses and household bulky material

Furniture and other large household items should be under the City’s eight-foot size limit and placed with at least four feet of clearance from obstructions.

Madison asks residents to separate metal/appliances from furniture because different equipment or processing can apply.

03

Appliances, electronics, tires and hazardous items

TVs, computers, printers and other electronics must not be left at the curb or placed in trash/recycling carts. Resident electronics recycling at City drop-off sites is free; businesses are excluded.

The separate listed appliance/tire recycling fees apply only to households whose recycling is collected privately. City green-cart recycling customers already pay through the Resource Recovery Special Charge. For private-recycling customers, listed examples are $35 for large refrigerators/freezers or washers, $15 for small refrigeration devices or microwaves, and $5 for car/small-truck tires ($10 on rims or for large-truck tires). Remove refrigerator/freezer doors.

04

Renovation debris and larger cleanouts

Madison accepts eligible material from minor home improvements performed by the resident, up to approximately 240 pounds per collection or drop-off. Contractor work and major remodeling debris are excluded, as are shingles, bricks, concrete and similar aggregate.

City drop-off sites are another option for residents and accept multiple categories of trash, recyclables, large items and electronics subject to current site rules.

Timing / hoursAddress-specific timing: check the Madison schedule at cityofmadison.com or call 608-266-4681 before set-out.

Confirm the Madison pickup date, item limits and preparation rules before setting anything out.

Drop-off sites are at 4602 Sycamore Avenue, 402 South Point Road and 1504 Quann-Olin Parkway. Bring proof of Madison residency or taxpayer status. Check seasonal hours: all sites close Wednesdays, Sundays and City holidays, and winter service is reduced.

If an appliance/tire fee applies to you, obtain and attach the fee sticker before visiting; site staff cannot accept payment. Electronics use the separate free household recycling program. For paint and other HHW, use the regional program linked through the City’s disposal guidance rather than a large-item work order.
