Quick answer
Anchorage’s automated residential garbage service does not automatically include an unscheduled couch or appliance beside the cart. Residents contact Solid Waste Services to arrange the bulky pickup.
SWS serves a defined mandatory collection area. Its residential category is a single-family dwelling; duplexes and larger properties are commercial collection accounts. Services are established and billed through the property owner, so tenants should work with the landlord.
Furniture, mattresses and household bulky material
Furniture, mattresses and other oversized household items can be handled through the scheduled bulky route when accepted. Follow the placement and preparation instruction provided with the appointment.
Do not set out items before you know the scheduled pickup date.
Appliances, electronics, tires and hazardous items
White goods, electronics, batteries, used oil and household hazardous waste can have separate transfer-station or special-waste rules.
Check the receiving facility before hauling a refrigerator, television, paint or chemical.
For a refrigerator, freezer, tire or television, confirm the exact pickup or facility option and fee with SWS. The live collection page does not make all special materials ordinary Saturday bulk.
Renovation debris and larger cleanouts
Construction and demolition debris may be accepted only under facility rules and fees rather than the residential bulky route.
For a large remodel or cleanout, confirm material type and current rates with Solid Waste Services first.
Local drop-off options and fees
Primary municipal self-haul route for residential trash and eligible large items.
Central Transfer Station’s residential trash entrance is 1310 East 56th Avenue, open Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Anchorage Regional Landfill is at 15500 East Eagle River Loop Road, with trash hours Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Cover and secure the load; the City lists a $30–$60 surcharge for uncovered/unsecured loads.
Household HHW drop-off is free for Anchorage residents at 40 pounds or less. Central Transfer HHW is listed at 1208 East 56th Avenue, Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; landfill HHW hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Call 907-201-8472 about material or excess quantities. Latex paint must be dried for disposal; it is not treated as hazardous waste.
Business hazardous waste is a separate qualifying-generator service at the landfill. Commercially collected refrigerators, liquid waste and other listed restricted loads are not accepted at Central or Girdwood transfer stations.
