Birmingham trash & bulky-item rules

Birmingham provides municipal bulk-trash service, but the collection date is neighborhood-specific. Residents should use the City’s current schedule rather than assuming a universal weekly or monthly bulk day.

01

Quick answer

Birmingham’s Public Works Department handles bulk trash, but the City publishes route-specific schedules. The correct date depends on the service area, so the first step is to look up the current calendar.

Do not copy a citywide frequency from an older blog or social post; Birmingham’s official schedule is the controlling source for the neighborhood.

02

Furniture, mattresses and household bulky material

Furniture, mattresses and other accepted bulky household material should be placed according to the schedule and location rules for the route.

If a scheduled bulk collection is missed, use 311 or MyBHAM311 rather than creating a second uncontrolled pile.

03

Appliances, electronics, tires and hazardous items

Appliances, electronics, tires, paint and household hazardous waste can have separate Birmingham/Jefferson County disposal options.

The City’s drop-off lists exclude HHW, liquid paint, tires, vehicle batteries and compressed-gas cylinders. Do not use a district dumpster or Eastern unload for those materials. Ask 311 about the current Jefferson County special-waste route and any refrigerator preparation.

04

Renovation debris and larger cleanouts

The free residential drop-off lists exclude construction/remodeling debris, including flooring/carpet, roofing, toilets, doors and pallets. Keep those out of district dumpsters and Eastern unload; arrange an authorized project-debris service.

For a major cleanout, separate household furniture from project debris.
