Honolulu trash & bulky-item rules

Honolulu uses appointment-based bulky collection. Most addresses may schedule one appointment per month, while Waikīkī has weekly service. The City collects only the items listed on the appointment, so the booking needs to match the curb pile.

Quick answer

Honolulu’s bulky-item system requires an appointment rather than open set-out. For most residential addresses, the current program allows one bulky appointment per month; Waikīkī is handled on a weekly appointment cycle.

Only items identified in the reservation are collected, so update or make the correct appointment instead of adding last-minute extras.

02

Furniture, mattresses and household bulky material

Each single-family household or individual multifamily unit can book five bulky items plus two metal appliances on a separate appliance appointment. Managers/AOAOs may arrange twenty bulky items and eight appliances through 808-768-3200, option 0, or collection@honolulu.gov.

The six-foot/sixty-pound maximum applies to long items and bundles, not every couch or mattress. Use the appointment instructions for securing glass, emptying items and leaving specified items unsealed.

03

Appliances, electronics, tires and hazardous items

Metal appliances use a separate appointment and the current single-family allowance is up to two appliances. Electronics, paint and household hazardous waste have their own City disposal routes.

Do not place an unscheduled refrigerator or appliance with a five-item furniture booking.

04

Renovation debris and larger cleanouts

Construction waste is not ordinary bulky pickup. Self-haul acceptance depends on material and site: the current location page lists Waimanalo Gulch for dirt, rock, sand, gravel, concrete and dead animals only, while the resident rules list some additional noncombustible examples. Confirm an actual construction load with disposal@honolulu.gov before travel.

Set items out no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before the appointment and have them ready by 6 a.m.; crews do not enter private property to retrieve items.

Timing / hoursFor most residential addresses, the current program allows one bulky appointment per month; Waikīkī is handled on a weekly appointment cycle.

Confirm the Honolulu pickup date, item limits and preparation rules before setting anything out.

City resident disposal is limited to two loads daily in approved sedans, SUVs, pickups or minivans. Trailers/larger rental vehicles need advance approval for a transfer station and are not allowed at convenience centers. Rental paperwork must be in the householder’s name; residents unload their own material.

Resident convenience centers normally operate daily, 7 a.m.–6 p.m., closed Christmas/New Year’s Day. Listed household appliances use a separate area and are limited to two monthly; passenger/light-truck tires use a separate recycling area with a four-tire monthly limit. Check the current location list: Keehi, 606 Middle Street, accepts combustible bulk but excludes large appliances, tires and compressed-gas items.

Kapaa at 100 Kapaa Quarry Road accepts listed household bulk, appliances, tires and green waste, with weekday hours 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and weekend hours 7 a.m.–6 p.m. General hazardous chemicals do not go in ordinary refuse/drop-off bins; call the City HHW line at 808-768-3201 for a household appointment and quantity instructions.

Before set-out

  1. Verify the service address. Confirm that City & County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services or its listed provider actually serves the property.

For Honolulu, start with the local authority links below. Recheck them before a special trip or unusual set-out because programs, prices and facility hours can change.

For C&D, City facility pages differ on accepted noncombustibles. Confirm the load with disposal@honolulu.gov; do not take furniture to Waimanalo Gulch based on an older guide.
