Lexington trash & bulky-item rules

Lexington city-served households can dispose of many bulky items through the municipal program. Furniture and mattresses generally go out on the regular collection day, while appliances and tires require a separate request through LexCall 311.

01

Quick answer

Lexington’s bulky rules depend on the item. Most furniture, mattresses and box springs can be placed for collection on the regular pickup day when the address receives City waste service.

Appliances and tires are different. The City tells residents to submit a LexCall 311 request; those scheduled pickups are normally completed within about five business days.

02

Furniture, mattresses and household bulky material

Common furniture belongs with the bulky route rather than inside the cart. Keep the item at the normal collection location and follow any set-out timing listed for the route.

For a refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer or other appliance, use the separate request process instead of assuming the furniture rule applies. Lexington accepts appliances containing Freon but not appliances containing oil, and doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers before pickup.

03

Appliances, electronics, tires and hazardous items

Lexington currently accepts up to four car or small-truck tires per week when they are off the rims under the special collection rules.

Electronics do not use the ordinary bulky route; the City directs them to the Electronics Recycling Center at 1306 Versailles Road. Current staffed electronics drop-off hours are Monday–Tuesday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Wednesday noon–4 p.m., Thursday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m.–noon. Paint and household chemicals also need the current special-waste program.

04

Renovation debris and larger cleanouts

The bulky program is for household material, not business-generated waste or unlimited construction debris. Heavy remodeling material should go to an appropriate facility or private service.

If you are unsure whether an item counts as normal bulky waste, use LexCall before set-out.
