Quick answer
St. Louis residents use the monthly bulky route for accepted household material rather than leaving oversized items out every week. The program is included in the solid-waste service fee.
For smaller loose material, use a container or bundle no heavier than 100 pounds, no longer than 6 feet and no greater than 2 feet in diameter. The City applies these limits to containers and bundles; furniture and appliances are separate accepted examples.
Furniture, mattresses and household bulky material
Furniture and household appliances are standard bulky examples. Bundled branches/logs can also be part of the monthly service when they meet the published limits.
Keep ordinary garbage out of the bulky pile so the collection crew can identify the material correctly.
Set out no more than three items by 6 a.m. Monday of the assigned collection week, at the curb or behind the home in the alley according to normal service. Keep alleys clear and allow the entire week; report a missed collection at 314-622-4800 after that week.
Appliances, electronics, tires and hazardous items
BOAT-E covers vehicle batteries, vehicle oil, appliances, tires and electronics during the monthly bulk week. Household batteries are not the vehicle-battery category. Remove refrigerator doors; the City says other large items need not be dismantled.
Household hazardous materials that are not part of BOAT-E need a separate approved program.
Renovation debris and larger cleanouts
Construction and demolition debris is not equivalent to three household bulky items. Use an authorized facility or debris service for remodeling waste.
Do not block alleys or access routes with the monthly bulky pile.
Local drop-off options and fees
Confirm the St. Louis pickup date, item limits and preparation rules before setting anything out.
Eligible City households can bring twelve approved transfer-station loads per year, included in the solid-waste fee. Bring photo ID plus the homeowner’s water/solid-waste bill; renters need a recent utility bill and a property owner who pays the solid-waste fee. Loads must fit the City’s half-ton-pickup size and vehicle rules; hired haulers and business waste are excluded.
South Transfer Station is at 4100 South 1st Street, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., excluding City holidays. Its accepted list specifically includes BOAT-E items and residential remodeling debris. HHW is not accepted at the transfer stations.
Paint, chemicals and other HHW use the regional HHW program by appointment. City residents can start through the official HHW link or call 314-622-4800; confirm any material-specific charges when booking.
